For one, what is S.A.D.?
As the weather turns cold, the sky turns dark, and the stress of family and holidays loom around the corner, we feel an excess of stress, anxiety, and uncertainty that manifests itself in our daily lives. This common experience is referred to as S.A.D., or Seasonal Affective Disorder, a type of depression that’s related to the changing of the seasons.
Symptoms of S.A.D. typically start in the fall and end in the spring. The most common treatments for S.A.D. include light therapy (sunlamps and vitamin D), psychotherapy, and other medications. While we might brush off S.A.D. as a case of the “winter blues,” or a “funk,” it can have a dramatic impact on our day-to-day lives, affecting our relationships, work, and leisure.
If you’re feeling the effects of S.A.D., you’re not alone. Over 10 million Americans suffer from S.A.D. each year. I’ve been affected by this condition my entire life, and have discovered tips and tricks that help me to combat the winter wind-down.
The Knowledge of The Rich Barber Method Book
After more than a decade as a veteran barber, I’ve learned a lot about how to cut hair and even more about how to cut the bullshit. “The Rich Barber Method” offers you a game plan to not only master the profession of barbering, but master your mind and your mood regardless of your surroundings.
Available in hard copy or audiobook, “The Rich Barber Method” teaches you how to change your reality by first confronting and changing yourself. While we can’t change the world on our own, we can change how we see it, how we act within it, and how we choose to navigate it.
This collection of positive affirmations, daily rituals, insights, tips, and tricks imparts all the knowledge I’ve gained over my barbering career (and my career as a human being) to provide direction to a new generation of barbers and entrepreneurs.
“The Rich Barber Method” teaches you how to succeed not just in business and barbering, but in self-realization, self-motivation, and self-actualization to help you combat S.A.D. and anything else life throws your way.
Selecting Positive Reading
We all know the expression “you are what you eat.” But more importantly, you are what you read! What we put into our minds is just as important as what we put into our bodies. If your mind is running on a junk diet of violence, misery, and strife, you will slowly begin to externalize and project those fantasies onto your reality. Humans are empathetic creatures and we experience what’s called “emotional contagion,” e.g. you cry when someone else cries.
In 2022, it’s imperative that you select your media like you select your food - only choosing the stuff that’s good for you! Check out “Can’t Hurt Me: Master Your Mind and Defy the Odds” by retired Navy SEAL and all around badass David Goggins and read how he overcame poverty, racism, and depression to become the success he is today.
Another great read for 2022 is “The Happiness Advantage: How a Positive Brain Fuels Success in Work and Life” by author Shawn Achor. This book teaches you how to cultivate happiness, achieve success, and find satisfaction with your work life and relationships. When in doubt, ask yourself: “if my mind were my stomach, would this media make me sick?” Mental health = mental wealth.
Buying Better, Buy Black
Supporting our community is the best way to support ourselves. While we may be individuals, still belong to a greater collective. Controlling where and why you spend your money will help you not only feel better about your purchases, but help others to succeed and your community to flourish.
This means buying black owned products and services whenever possible. Drive the extra mile to go to a black owned restaurant. Pay a little extra to buy black-made clothes. Subscribe and listen to black voices and leave that good Yelp review for your local black-owned business.
Buying black can help us close the racial wealth gap, strengthen local economies, create jobs, and celebrate black culture. Check out some great black-owned brands in 2022 like Bricks & Wood, Renowned LA and Oui the People.
Remember: don’t let the season be your reason to feel down. Use these tips and tricks to help make your winter work for you.
